Is Your PC Under Hacking Threat?

How to Protect Children Online

How safe is your child? As much as possible, we don’t want our children to be harmed, not by anyone or anything, as in not at all. Just like protecting them from sicknesses, guarding their diet, and assisting their education, and so much more, we have to guard their online activities. As a parent, our duties and responsibilities effects all the time.

We are not, in any way, permitted to take a holiday or a vacation from being a parent. Having that said, we should ‘NOT’ stop guarding our children against any harm, not only in the real but in the CYBER world.

All of us, we’re aware how good or bad the internet can influence our kids. Not only one or two reports have been broadcasted about how damaging is using the internet if our kids will be exposed to….

  • Pornography
  • Hate speech
  • Gambling such as poker, casinos, etc.
  • Violence
  • Video gaming
  • False philosophy
  • And so much more…

While the internet may seem to become a very helpful ‘tool’ for our children in ‘research and study,’ it can also pose serious threats. If we don’t want them harmed online, let’s take a look at these tips on how to safeguard kids online.

  1. Spend time with our children while browsing the internet. Let’s locate our PC where we can see the activities of our children on the internet. Perhaps, we can place it in the living room.
  2. Monitor children while browsing online. This way, we can make sure that they stay away from harmful sites.
  3. Don’t let children meet someone online without your permission.
  4. Don’t allow them to enter chat rooms without supervision, or as much as possible prohibit them from doing such.
  5. Check your credit card bill. See if there are pornographic sites that charge your credit cards with products or services you didn’t request for.
  6. Spend time talking to him about some rules in using the internet. Have those posted near your computer.
  7. Tell him that he shouldn’t give out photos including his full name and telephone number to anyone online.
  8. Control the administrative passwords of your computer system so you can keep ahead of their online activities.
  9. Block their access to social sites while they’re in elementary and middle school. Social media isn’t a good influence as we hone our children in their growing up years.

“But, I cannot do all these. I’m a busy working parent. Is there any protection out there that protects my child’s online activities while I’m away?”

Yes, there is! You can do something about this problem. Keep your children from harmful online sites ALL THE TIME, even while you’re asleep and your kid’s spending some time online.

Bitdefender….staying awake for you

More than just for office and school-related purposes,  the computer has become an integral part of modern everyday life. Internet shopping and internet banking is an established business that is run by the internet using any computer device. However, with the internet being used by millions worldwide, it is a common knowledge that there are ill-minded individuals who are there to cause harm or disrupt the lives of those who rely on their computers and the internet to complete everyday transactions.

Protect Yourself and Family!

With this danger in mind, it is normal to look for ways to keep your computer and yourself protected. You need first to check for your system’s vulnerability and then identify the means to which you can avoid being compromised with the different malwares, viruses, and various hacking techniques.

How do you check if your PC is safe? Here is a simple guide in making sure that you are secured:

Always check for the authenticity of your operating systems especially if you are running a Windows OS.

The Windows Security Center should be updated and is installed with the right protective features to avoid being breeched with viruses and malwares.

It is better to manually install updates rather than relying on automatic ones.

There is a tendency that when your computer is infected with a malware, the automatic updates are blocked and will not work. This will make your system very vulnerable to a lot of viruses from the internet. Manually scanning your system is also recommended as there are malwares that displays false scan results.

Make sure that you have the latest anti-virus software installed and that it is updated very often.

Always check the website of your anti- virus software for you to be aware of any updates. It is also advised that you block websites that are marked as malicious or might have suspicious content. A pop- up blocker is very useful against websites that spam the user with pop-up sites which contain malwares and viruses. An anti- spyware is also highly recommended as spywares are known to make any PC unusable.

Secure all connections with a password.

Avoid giving out passwords or even allow other people from connecting into your network if you can. This makes your network less vulnerable from hackers that are looking for unsecured connections to hack. Even if your friend is unaware about it, hackers can use her connection to your network to penetrate into your system.

Lastly, get yourself updated with the latest news on internet security breech and hacking.

There are many resources online where you can get educated so that you will be aware of the new kinds of hacks, viruses, and malwares that are being distributed in the internet. From a lot of forums, you can get ideas and tips that will help you become vigilant against the harmful elements of the internet.

With these simple steps in checking your computer’s security, you can be sure that you do not let other people poke their noses into any of your business. But even if you managed to do all these, you still can’t make sure that you are entirely protected.

One of the best things you can do to avoid compromising yourself with hackers is by limiting sensitive information and other files on your computer. However, even if it is recommended that you keep personal files away from your computer, it is highly impossible as everything is in digital format nowadays. Not only do you deal with having to keep everything from pictures, music, and even your work into your computer, you also have to accept the fact that you divulge sensitive information such as credit card information, bank accounts, and other information in the internet.

So what can you do to enhance the security features of your PC? The best way is to purchase reliable internet protection software like the Bitdefender Total Security 2013. Is Your PC Under Hacking Threat?

Is Your PC Under A Hacking Threat?

Having your PC connected to the internet can pose a major problem if you are not going to get your computer system protected. Through the years, different means of compromising users were developed by hackers, so if you have an unprotected internet access, you can be hassled by ’terrorizing’ hacking acts.

Identity theft—a common form of hacking.

The theft of propriety information would be costly for us.

What happens is that a hacker, once he gets into your system, can have all the necessary information to pretend as you.

For one, activities such as internet banking, shopping, and other transactions can be completed as long as the hacker has his needed data to complete the transaction.

Credit card frauds are very common and that owners can do very little or nothing about it.

When you get hacked, there are a number of consequences that you will have to face such as:

  1. Your personal information, such as name, contact details, pictures, and even your connections, can be used to perform illegal and indecent acts. The authorities will have to hunt you down instead of the real perpetrator just because your identity was used to do the crime.
  2. Your email address can be spammed or be used to spam other accounts. This will become a problem once your account becomes blacklisted or be shut down by the email provider especially when the email address is the one that you officially use for either personal or business transactions.
  3. Your passwords for internet banking, web services, subscriptions, etc. can be used for the personal gain of the hacker.
  4. You and your family’s security, especially your children, is very much compromised.

So as not to put yourself into a compromising hacking situation, you should be able to identify signs that will tell you that your computer is in trouble.

Common signs that your computer has been hacked and that you can notice almost immediately are:

  • Programs take a lot of time to load than they used to do before. For one, the simple tasks like creating new folders could also take longer than usual.
  • Web pages, even those that are relatively light takes forever to load.
  • You have emails in your sent items folder that you never sent in the first place. You could also receive messages in your inbox asking why you are forwarding spam messages.
  • Frequent advertisement pop-ups that slows down your system.
  • Your anti-virus program is turned off even if you did not recently configure the settings.
  • Changes in any of the personalized settings in your desktop. Your wallpaper may be changed, some mysterious icons show up, or new software was installed.
  • Decreased disk space both in your computer and in your bandwidth allowances.
  • New users are showing up in your system.
  • Your web pages are defaced plastered with a message that your website is hacked.
  • There are inexplicable processes running.
  • High network usage even if you are almost not doing anything.
  • Your computer shuts down or some processes crash when you try to open them.
  • There are suspicious log files that look tampered or were wiped out suddenly
  • High CPU usage.
  • The computer seems to strain and sound strange even if you put it on standby mode.

What to Do Now?

Once you have noticed these signs and have established indeed you’re hacked, the first thing that you need to do is to stop his access immediately.

  • All network interfaces should be temporarily turned off so that the hacker cannot remotely access your system.
  • You have to switch into a single- user mode and disable all other processes that you are not using.
  • It is also during this time that you will have to inform the proper authorities that your system was breached.
  • You have make sure that you inform your credit card company so that transactions that will be made using the hacked account will not be honored and an immediate damage control for the theft can be addressed promptly when you suspect of an identity theft,
  • You must also change your old passwords or cancel and create new accounts for your email, social media, and other subscriptions. It is better to start anew rather than depend on the thought that you have eliminated the hacker from your system.

After these initial countermeasures, it is suggested that you further protect your system against hackers by installing dependable anti-virus software that could act not only to protect you against viruses and malwares but also to serve as a strong protection against individuals that are trying to hack into your computer.
