BitDefender Total Security 2008 - New Features

Total Security 2008 includes several interesting new features. I have already mentioned the new Gamer Mode. Added functionality are also Anti-phishing, Wi-Fi management and more.
The Wifi security is great for all of us that have tried to secure our laptop in the home network. Going through Windows security settings for Wifi can make anyone want to sell the computer and start putting Ikea funiture together instead.
The New Total Security Features are:
New - Gamer Mode
The new Gamer Mode temporarily modifies the protection settings so as to minimize their impact on gaming performance while maintaining a safe and fun gaming experience.
New - Web Anti-Phishing
Protects against phishing attacks by filtering all accessed web pages for fraud attempts. When a web site is detected as Phishing, the user is notified and asked whether it should be displayed or not.
New - User Interface
The new interface provides all users with information on the protection status of the system and the possibility to fix security issues quickly. A separate section contains further protection settings to be configured by advanced users.
Improved - Firewall Protection
The firewall network profile system has been redesigned to lower the number of alerts and pop-ups that require the user’s attention. The product detects your computer’s network configurations and and it sets the appropriate security policy.
New! Wi-Fi Management
Helps prevent unauthorized access to the Wi-Fi internet connection by notifying the user about computers that log in to the network.
Improved - Protection from Spam Email
Responds faster to new spamming techniques with new adaptive engines. The main advantage is that new spam is detected and blocked based on the similarities (oftentimes very subtle) between the new messages received and the ones the engines were trained on.
New - Data Backup
Safeguards your data by creating backup copies to local and removable drives, CD-R/RW or DVD-R/RW. The backup process is automatic and transparent because it can be performed based on a previously set schedule. Moreover, only new or changed files will be gradually added to the backup location.
New - PC Tune-up
Improves PC operation by removing unnecessary files and registry entries. The registry cleaner scans for orphaned registry keys (keys whose corresponding file does not exist anymore). The duplicate finder checks for duplicate files and prompts the user to decide what action to be taken on them.
New - Trace Clean-up
Simply deleting files will not make them disappear from the hard disk. BitDefender now offers a simple way to completely erase files and “traces” of files from the disk to prevent unauthorized recovery.

While BitDefender provides strong protection, one aspect of the interface is glaringly contradictory.
The tooltip on the system-tray icon says “There are no issues affecting the security of your computer”.
“Oh good” I say. Now I open the BitDefender window and there I see “There are three security-related items which need your attention” What?
Imagine how confusing that could be to an inexperienced user. I’m not inexperienced, I just find it annoying and stupid. Consequently I’ve bought a rival product which doesn’t contradict itself. A stupid mistake like this is causing Softwin and their agents to lose sales.
